Wind cooperative Zeeuwind has signed an innovative power contract with COROOS, which will see COROOS switch completely from grey to green power from Zeeland soil from 1 January. To this end, Zeeuwind and COROOS are entering into a long-term partnership. This consists of producing and supplying the required megawatt hours for both COROOS sites in Kapelle and Geldermalsen and a joint further exploration of renewable energy initiatives. To make this volume sustainable, energy from Windpark Polenweg near Borssele will be used. Just 17 kilometres as the crow flies from Kapelle, where COROOS manufactures some of its products.
The innovative power contract, which is officially called a Sleeved PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), is an energy contract where two parties agree on contracting an external source of renewable energy. Here, the volumes are passed on ("sleeved") so that they get from the producer to the end customer without the producer or customer having to become a traditional energy company itself. To facilitate this construction, COROOS uses the services of Scholt Energy.
"We are happy with the cooperation. This is because the switch fulfils an important part of COROOS' sustainability programme. We are thereby reducing the company's CO2 footprint by 35%. Without Zeeuwind, we would not have been able to achieve this yet," says sustainability manager Sam Flikweert.
Besides a solid partner for the supply of sustainable energy, COROOS was also looking for the social added value of cooperation. Doing business with Zeeuwind means indirectly contributing to subsequent sustainable initiatives. With the proceeds, the cooperative invests in new clean energy projects and a liveable environment.
"This power contract shows that it is possible to enter into a long-term sustainable cooperation. The locally generated energy is consumed locally and the proceeds also benefit the people of Zeeland," Aldus director/administrator Teus Baars said.
For the creation of this PPA ("Power Purchase Agreement"), Zeeuwind drew on Stroomkr8's expertise in energy advisory services and PPAs.
